In 1999, after having invited the NEXTFRAME Festival on two occasions to Monterrey, Voladero Espacio Cultural decided to organize the first film festival in Monterrey, in the year 2000. Thus the Voladero International Film and Video Festival was established, directed on its first three editions by José Galindo and since 2003 by Juan Manuel González.

In 2005 the Voladero International Film and Video Festival became the Monterrey International Film Festival, supported by institutions like the Nuevo León Council for Culture and the Arts, MMCinemas, the Monterrey City Government, the National Council for Culture and the Arts, the Mexican Institute of Cinematography, The Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León, the Nuevo Leon Filmmakers Guild, and Voladero Espacio Cultural, and became a yearly event of cultural relevance for Monterrey and Mexico.

In past editions, the festival has had the participation of the Basque Cinematheque, Germany, China, Argentina and Australia as Guest Countries.

Today, the Monterrey International Film Festival is considered one of the most important in the country and certainly the most important in northern Mexico. In 2010 it will be take place for the sixth time, with Mexico as the focus country, commemorating 200 years of independence, and a new selection of contemporary films for local, national and foreign audiences.
